Something from nothing: pragmatic parsing of partitive possessives∗

چکیده

Sentence structure is often ambiguous. Models of human parsing typically assume that such ambiguity is resolved through cues that are present in the signal (Elman et al., 2004). Here, I present experimental evidence that the absence of an overt cue can be meaningful for resolving parsing ambiguities, based on a freeform selection task with partitive possessives, which exhibit morphophonological alternation (Nevins, 2011). This result is parallel to the use of negative evidence in tasks like reference (Frank and Goodman, 2012; Stiller et al., 2015), which is motivated by pragmatic principles (Grice, 1975; Levinson, 2000), and I argue that it cannot readily be explained by a parser which does not incorporate such principles. ∗Advising committee: Chris Potts (chair), Vera Gribanova, and Boris Horizanov. I’d like to thank these advisors and all others who contributed to aspects of this work.

Pragmatic expressions in cross-linguistic perspective

This  paper  focuses  on  some  pragmatic  expressions  that  are  characteristic  of  informal  spoken English, their possible equivalents in some other languages, and their use by EFL learners from different  backgrounds.  These  expressions,  called  general  extenders  (e.g.  and  stuff,  or something), are shown to be different from discourse markers and to exhibit variation in form, funct...

Where does the meaning of compounds and possessives come from? A contrastive view

The literature on the semantics of (non-argumental) compound nouns and possessives is rich on so-called pragmatic proposals, which argue that any novel compound or possessive is semantically underspecified, and that its more specific meaning is only contextually determined, i.e. the Variable < Hypothesis. It has sometimes been argued that there is no positive evidence against pragmatic proposal...

Minding the Gap

I'm all for pragmatics. But I don't think it helps the cause to blur the boundary between semantics and pragmatics. The purpose of this chapter is to explain why. The basic reason is this. Even though, as people have been pointing out for some years now, the linguistic meaning of a given sentence generally underdetermines what a speaker means in uttering it, it does not follow that linguistic m...

A semantic reanalysis of the partitive constraint * Helen

In this article a semantic reanalysis of the Partitive Constraint is given that is based on a distinction between determiners that quantify over entities and determiners that quantify over sets of entities. This leads to a straightforward analysis of problems that arose within earlier analyses of the Partitive Constraint. The reformulated Partitive Constraint simply states that NPs that are all...

Pragmatic Inference with Conditionals and Concessives in Japanese

Expressions in Japanese with indeterminates such as "nani (what)" and "dare (who)" get interpretations very much like universal quantification or existential quantification when followed by conjunctive particle "mo" or disjunctive particle "ka". Focusing our attention on sequences of the form such as "nani-ka (something)", they generally get interpretations of "something ex...
